MLB Baseball Betting Lines: Tampa Bay Rays vs Detroit Tigers

Tampa Bay Rays’ manager Joe Maddon said before a season-high, 11-game road trip that he’d be pleased if his team came back home 6-5. After winning five of their last six, the Rays now have a chance to finish 7-4 with a win Monday at the Detroit Tigers in a make-up game.

Rays rookie Alex Cobb goes for his second career win against Phil Coke, a converted reliever. Detroit has lost three of its last five, but has won 10 of 14 overall to gain share of first place in the AL-Central. This game was rained out May 25 after the Tigers had won the first two games of the series.

Tigers LH Phil Coke (1-6, 4.11) vs. Rays RH Alex Cobb (1-0, 4.24).

Coke gave up 10 hits and six runs – four earned – over five innings in his first start off the disabled list, June 8. Coke injured his right ankle and was pulled after allowing two hits and one run in 3 1/3 against Tampa Bay, May 23. He is 0-1, with a 1.58 ERA in 17 1/3 innings lifetime against the Rays – mostly as a reliever. Current Rays are 4-for-27 against Coke.

Cobb earned his first major league victory, allowing seven hits and one run over 6 ½ innings, June 7 against the Angels. He has struck out 10 and walked eight in three starts over 17 innings. Cobb was 5-0 with a 1.14 ERA at Triple-A Durham before being recalled.

Detroit has averaged 5.5 runs the last 14 games to move back into the race after producing 4.25 the first 51. The Tigers are getting stronger contributions throughout the lineup. Austin Jackson is 17-for-46 in June and Brennan Boesch, despite going 0-for-5 Sunday, is 18-for-46. Victor Martinez is 6-for-11 the last three games to get his average up to .316. Miguel Cabrera was on base all four times Sunday, with three walks and a single, but he was just 2-for-12 in the four-game series against Seattle. He still has a .438 on-base percentage, one of the best in the majors.

Justin Ruggiano was a bit overshadowed by the heroics of Evan Longoria, Johnny Damon, Ben Zobrist and others over the weekend, but the outfielder has been a key force in a 5-1 stretch for the Rays. He is 11-for-24 with four RBIs the last six games, including three hits Sunday as the No. 3 hitter. Ruggiano also stole a home run away from J.J. Hardy Saturday with a leaping catch.

Longoria hopes to continue his big weekend, when he had six RBIs including his first career inside-the-park homer. Johnny Damon has reached base in 37 straight games, matching the franchise record set by Ben Grieve in 2001.

The Tigers are expected to recall outfielder Magglio Ordonez on Monday from his rehab stint at Triple-A Toledo. Ordonez is batting .172 for Detroit, limited to 99 at bats by an ankle injury. Ordonez homered in his final two games at Toledo.
